AristoFlex (TM)
Description | How it works | Three general uses

AristoFlex™ (U.S. patent 5,797,234)

AristoFlex™ is a flexible tension-bolt and retaining washer assembly that can "go around the corner." You can tighten it without twisting, and it does not loosen easily under vibration.

This simple device combines the properties of highly sophisticated bolt connections with the functionality of rope.

AristoFlex also is torsion-less (no twisting stresses). This automatically makes it about 28% stronger than any equivalent rigid bolt.

Adaptable production: If you license AristoFlex technology, you can adapt it to the manufacturing methods and materials needed to yield the quality and volume you require.

Related technology: AristoFlex is one component of the AristoTechnics AristoSet™ modular building system.

How It Works
Animation showing how AristoFlex works
(Please wait for animation to load.)

The AristoFlex assembly includes a flexible bolt, at least one retaining washer, and a nut.

The threaded end of the bolt has a flat portion that engages with the retaining washer.

The retaining washer has a D-shaped hole that engages the flat on the thread. This washer also features three evenly spaced spikes that engage the flange.

To engage and lock:

  1. Push the flexible bolt through the holes.
  2. Engage the retaining washer on the threaded end, with spikes facing inward.
  3. Engage spikes in existing holes on the flange material.
  4. Apply nut to specified pre-load.

Three General Uses

You can use AristoFlex in three general ways:

  • As a flexible, contour-adapting bolt: You can use AristoFlex instead of rigid bolts or pre-bent rods. For example, in building or construction applications, it makes connections and adjustments possible in out-of-level conditions — as well as between non-parallel surfaces, curves, and corners. AristoFlex can connect parts with non-parallel sides, so there is no need for you to machine for parallelism or perpendicularity.

  • As a contour-adapting, torsion-less, highly elongated bolt: Use AristoFlex instead of traditional specialty bolts. For example, it can connect critical joints such as piston rods, bearing housings, engine blocks, transmission housings, and so on. It also can increase load-bearing capacity by about 28% (compared to a rigid bolt of equivalent size) by eliminating torsion stress.

  • As a flexible bolt of virtually unlimited length: Rather than using multiple rigid bolts, you can use just one AristoFlex. For instance, when attaching a sign to a post, one AristoFlex bolt (of sufficient length) can weave through a series of holes. This means you only have to fasten one nut — a much faster approach than applying several bolts and nuts.
